Winning Project – JATHub X-plore Marketing Ideathon

Crafting Smiles™ was selected as a winning project at the JATHub X-plore Marketing Ideathon, delivered in collaboration with University College London (UCL) School of Management.

The project was recognized for its innovative approach to community participation, wellbeing, and social impact.

Community Participation Ecosystem in Action

Crafting Smiles demonstrates how independent communities can support one another through a shared purpose.

Rather than relying on a central organization, local volunteer teams respond naturally to community needs, sharing skills, experience and participation across different regions.

This low-cost, community-led approach enables ideas to spread organically, allowing communities to inspire, strengthen and support each other while retaining local ownership.

Documentary Feature

In this exclusive interview, Crafting Smiles shares the story behind using handmade crafts to spread joy and build meaningful community connections. Through creativity and compassion, the initiative shows how small acts of making can create smiles and positive change across cultures.

In this documentary demonstrates the profound power of community resilience. From a small group of five mothers to a movement of over 1,000 volunteers, we explore how handmade crafts can bridge cultural gaps, provide essential emotional support for those facing life's toughest challenges, and foster a true sense of belonging in a new home

Founder Story

Hi, I’m Ron, founder of Crafting Smiles® .

This initiative began with a simple act of community care. After my son’s classmate underwent brain surgery in the UK, I made a small handmade gift for her as a gesture of support. Seeing the comfort it brought to the child and her family revealed how even small handmade items can carry meaning, connection, and care.

What started as a personal act of kindness gradually evolved into a wider community effort —  Over time, Crafting Smiles evolved beyond handmade donations into a wider community participation ecosystem, connecting creativity, wellbeing, belonging and social contribution across different communities.

Mission

To bring people together through creativity, participation and shared contribution, strengthening wellbeing, belonging and community connection.

Community Innovation & Partnerships

2026 marks a new stage in the development of Crafting Smiles, bringing together community participation, wellbeing, creative engagement and cross-sector collaboration.

Recent highlights include presenting at UCL School of Management and launching new partnerships with JAT Hub CIC and Tree of Life Balloon Art. Together, we are exploring new ways to engage university students through creativity, community participation and wellbeing initiatives.

This includes the launch of the Breathe Community Wellbeing Pilot, a collaborative programme designed to connect students, volunteers and local communities through shared creative activities, social connection and meaningful contribution.

Independent Preliminary Research

Preliminary Research Summary 2026

Crafting Smiles® collaborated with an independent doctoral researcher to conduct the first preliminary analysis of participant wellbeing data collected during Phase 1 of the project.

The analysis explored the relationship between participation and participant wellbeing.

 The preliminary analysis found that:

  • Participants generally reported low levels of anxiety and depression at baseline.
  • Among repeat participants, depressive symptoms showed a statistically significant reduction.
  •  Among participants who initially reported symptoms, both depressive and anxiety symptoms showed statistically significant reductions.

While these findings are encouraging, they are preliminary, based on a relatively small sample, and further longitudinal research is recommended.

Independent preliminary analysis by Dr. Mark Chih-Wei Liang, MD.

The findings presented in this summary are preliminary and have not yet been peer reviewed.
